GameCrush connects gaming geeks for a price. I tried it and managed to scare away a girl. Other than that, it was actually enjoyable.

Wikipedia summaries for Xenogears, Final Fantasy...
When I was a young gamer, I remember being thoroughly impressed by Xenogears’ gripping action and dramatic animated scenes even when I was also thoroughly confused by the storyline. Tales of reincarnated dudes, god machines and thousands-year-old government conspiracies aren’t exactly bed-time reading. And Final Fantasy Tactics possibly had an even more convoluted storyline (seriously,...

Independence Weekend in Washington, DC
The fourth of July weekend was my first time in Washington, DC, and I quickly concluded that it is not a city for rat lovers. I’m not one, thank god, but I know they exist. I knew a guy in high school who had several rats in a cage in his bedroom (that’s right, his bedroom) and the cage itself was a massive contraption of wires and plastic like a twisted Ken and Barbie dream house....

Most guys constantly ask themselves how they’ll survive if a life-or-death situation broke out RIGHT NOW. Thankfully, Portal lets us live out that fantasy without, you know, risking death.

When Kobe loses (knee fluid), the Lakers win
The Lakers are looking pretty good right now. Two nights after knocking the Suns back on their heels with a 128-107 pounding, the Lakers again dominated the Phoenix squad with an efficient 124-111 performance en route to their eighth straight postseason victory. Although the Lakers have amassed an impressive 10-2 playoff record so far, you’d be forgiven for not believing that this coolly...

Did you know: The Kristen Wiig edition
Before she was a SNL player with a rapidly growing movie resume (which includes the upcoming MacGruber), Kristen Wiig played marriage counselor Dr. Pat “The Quack” Lane on Spike TV’s reality program parody The Joe Schmo Show. Now you know.

When audio engineer Jens Nilsson needs to create sound effects for a computer game, he goes to the bathroom. Unconventional? Certainly. Unsanitary? Actually, no, because the tub, air vents and light bulbs in Nilsson’s bathroom have proved to be the perfect instruments for making the creepy sounds in the cult horror Penumbra trilogy.

Reviewers give iBooks high marks despite complete...
The iBooks application is exclusively for the iPad, which doesn’t go on sale until Saturday morning. For some reason, the inability to actually see or use the application hasn’t stopped more than 100 people from weighing in on the application’s merits, or the merits of the people weighing in on the application’s merits. Sound strange? It is. We’ve seen this kind of...

The Impossible Bloomberg Makeover →
Simplifying the interface of the terminal would not be accepted by most users because, as ethnographic studies show, they take pride on manipulating Bloomberg’s current “complex” interface. I’ve used it. It sucks.

My proof that an iPhone app site lied about...
I wrote this editorial piece for MacDirectory.com in response to this Wired article. iPhone app site lies about trading reviews for cash - and I can prove it by Matt Marquez Apple’s iPhone App Store is filled to bursting with more than 150,000 apps so it’s no surprise that review sites have sprung up to help the overwhelmed masses choose their next download. And as Wired pointed...

Fox staffers say Beck's comments taint their work" →
“By calling President Obama a racist and branding progressivism a ‘cancer,’ Beck has achieved a lightning-rod status that is unusual even for the network owned by Rupert Murdoch. And that, in turn, has complicated the channel’s efforts to neutralize White House criticism that Fox is not really a news organization.” - WaPo’s Howard Kurtz

There’s a short story by sci-fi author Philip K. Dick that tells how an alien race designs a game for Earth children that conditions them to make disastrous financial decisions. Turns out we can create games to mess up our children’s fiscal sense just fine on our own. But can somebody remind me the name of the story?

The best Mass Effect 2 quotes (SPOILERS)
Mass Effect 2 is a video game masterpiece with thrilling gunfights and superb graphics, but its pitch-perfect dialogue may be its best feature. If you notice a worthy quote that’s absent from my list (or you spot an error), leave a comment or email it to me at matt.marquez[at]gmail.com and...

Why cyber criminals want your Twitter account
Another week, another Twitter scam. After being targeted in the latest round of this never-ending barrage of Twitter attacks, I had to look into why anybody in their right mind wants to hack into my Twitter account and all 130 of my measly followers (though I love you all!). Turns out that our Twitter handles are merely stepping stones to a bigger payoff. Security experts from the Kaspersky Lab...

Permanent travelers
Think about all the stuff in your life – the apartment, the furniture, the clothes, the books, the gadgets, the toys. Now imagine tossing out everything that doesn’t fit into a large backpack. It sounds almost like a nightmare, doesn’t it? But for some people, living out of a bag and with no permanent address is a dream come true. I call these people permanent travelers. Pius Lee was...

Reliving Venice's Carnival shot by shot
My eight days in Venice disappeared absurdly fast but I was able to meet some very cool people, snap some great pictures and contract a burning desire to return for next year’s Carnival. I know New York City isn’t exactly a slouch when it comes to the great cities of the world, but the Carnival celebration transforms Venice from a special place into something out of a Disney movie, and...
